Why is `heap` so slow compared to `malloc`?
After I ran heap profiling on my code, I found that a lot of my memory is taken up by heap memory while a lot of my variables are on the stack. Then when I realized heap had such a bad name on stackoverflow, I started trying to look into it. I found that heap works about twice as slow as malloc, which is something I had never thought of. I’ve read that heap needs to be managed, but isn’t malloc and stack memory the same thing? Wouldn’t stack memory be taken care of by the OS when the program is ran? I also looked at this question, but the first answer says only memory that is freed back to the OS is added to the OS heap, which is irrelevant since it says it’s taking care of that in the OS’s heap.
Just wanted to ask why, if memory allocation happens on the stack, isn’t that more efficient than managing it on the heap?

Heap allocation is a lot slower than stack allocation, because it requires more effort to manage heap memory than stack memory.
When you allocate a stack variable, the OS automatically allocates a contiguous area of memory and adds it to the stack pointer. In order to free that memory when you’re done, the OS simply removes it from the stack pointer, which is easy to do with a single instruction, whereas heap allocation requires using additional instructions to allocate a new block of memory and copy old data over to the new block, then deallocating the old block and adding the new one.
